TotR: Fall Race Schedule

Ah fall racing.  Perfect weather-cool, crisp air but the sun still warms you up, it’s my favorite running season. The thought of munching on a post-race/long run warm apple cider doughnut or pumpkin anything (except spiced latte-yuck!) is making my mouth water right now.  I’m linking up with April, Erika and Patty today for Tuesdays on the Run.

This week’s topic:  fall race schedule.

My fall race season begins in September locally in Hampton, Virginia at the Hampton Bay Days 10K.

Next up is the Smuttynose Rockfest Half in Portsmouth, NH.  This is our “wedding race.”  My fiancé, Tyler and I decided to run a race either prior to or after our wedding and found that Smuttynose is perfect since it’s the weekend before our wedding and it’s on the way to our destination.  No goal times, just running to finish injury free and have a fun race with the hubs- to-be!

The next event is just that–an event.  The Fall Foliage Bike Festival is a weekend of cycling in the Shenandoah Valley.  I grew up visiting my grandparents in this area and it’s just beautiful this time of year.  I’m sticking to the 25-30 mile distances while Tyler and his friend are going for the century.

Back to racing a couple of weeks later at the Wicked 10K.  My absolute favorite race, hands down.  It’s a very well-organized event put on by local running company J&A Racing, who in my opinion have never put on a bad race!  This year it’s actually on Halloween, so I anticipate some pretty cool costumes!

November brings the Richmond Half Marathon, which is another favorite of mine.  The last time I ran it was in 2012 and I thought it was time to return to one of my favorite cities for this late fall run.  Again, no real goals as of now, but we’ll see when we get closer.

The fall races season ends with the Blue Talon Bistro Turkey Trot 5K in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Another fun, local race run through Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary Campus.  I adore turkey trots, and since I had to skip mine last year due to injury, I’m super excited about this one.  What can be better than running on my favorite holiday?

What is one fall race you are looking forward to this year?

Happy Sweating!

  1. As I said before, I loved Smuttynose! It was my comeback race after a really bad half the previous spring. The weather sucked, but the chowder & lobster rolls rocked. 🙂

Looking forward to my Green Mt Half & hoping I can stay healthy enough to rock it!

  2. I didn’t realize that Smuttynose was a “wedding race.” That’s such an awesome idea! It sounds like you’ve got a great Fall lined up. My Fall races include the Marine Corps Marathon 10k and the Wine and Dine Half marathon in Disney World.

    • Well, I’m not sure if it’s anyone else’s wedding race but it is ours 🙂 I definitely want to do the Wine and Dine someday–running a race through Disney at night seems like it would be fun!

  3. I love running and cycling during the fall, too. Fall foliage is the best!!! I’ve never heard of Smuttynose until now, but it sounds amazing. Portsmouth is so beautiful. Are you going to wear a costume at the Wicked 10K!?!?!?
