December and January tend to be off-season months or the start of training for a spring half or full marathon for a lot of runners and triathletes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your legs moving with a fun run. These aren’t specific race recommendations, more like ideas to keep you moving through the winter.
New Year’s Eve and Day races have become increasingly popular over the past few years, they are everywhere! It’s a fun way to close out or welcome the year with health and fitness in mind.
If you are racing an early spring half or full marathon, look for a tune-up race or race series. When I lived in Hampton Roads, the Tidewater Striders had a tune-up series for the Shamrock Marathon and Half that pretty much lined up with where a runner should be if training for the race. You could sign up for all of the races or just one.
If you are lucky enough to live in an area that gets snow and has a snowshoe race-try one! If you do live in an area that gets a lot of snow, you can likely rent snowshoes. I would love to try one of these races, but I can’t seem to find one nearby! Snowshoeing on the trail it is 🙂
A trail or XC race. I did a winter trail series a couple years ago and it was SO much fun. The muddier the better.
Sometimes it’s difficult to find a winter race or the weather is just frightful-why not check out a virtual race! Gone For A Run has a monthly virtual race that you can sign up for, includes some swag and you can donate to charities through the virtual race. You can do this kind of race outside or on the treadmill.
